Mulch

How deep should I install mulch in my yard?

We recommend a depth of approximately two to three inches. This does not mean that you need to put down two to three inches of new mulch every year. When too much mulch is applied it prevents air and water from reaching the soil. This is detrimental for the health of your plants. The amount of mulch that is right for your property will vary depending on your current depth of mulch in your plant beds.

I cut my lawn myself but I need someone to do the spring mulch and edging will you do just that service?

Yes we perform a onetime cleanup and mulching in the spring and/or fall for many clients.

I have an orange or yellow growth on my new mulch what is it?

Slime molds are frequently observed when they form large colonies on mulch around trees or shrubs. They may initially appear as a slimy mound or mass, come in a variety of colors, and are often unsightly. They often appear in shades of orange or yellow and will turn brown or grey in a day or two. They are harmless. They are caused by moisture and temperature change.

Do you just deliver mulch if I want to spread it myself?

Yes we deliver mulch, topsoil, sand and gravel.

What depth should the mulch is put down?

Typically you want to maintain a three inch depth. This does not mean that you need to put three new inches on every year. The application of too much mulch will prevent air and water from reaching the soil, which in turn is bad for your plants. The amount of mulch that is right for your property will vary depending on your current existing amount of mulch.

How long does it take to do a mulch job on a residential property?

Depending on the size and composition of the job it typically takes about a half to a full day to complete.

I have a small area that needs mulch. Do you use a blower truck or the traditional wheel barrow methods?

A blower truck is overkill on a small project. We use the most cost effective method on your project to give you the best possible price. Large open projects are an excellent application for the blower truck. Our objective on every job large or small is to produce the best possible look for the homeowner or property manager.

Will I save money if I request you use a blower truck?

No our pricing is the same whatever method is used to install the mulch on your project. We will use the best method we know of based on the specific property.

Are there really insects such as termites and ants in mulch?

No. The process in which mulch is created has a lot to do with that. The moisture and heat contained in a pile of bulk mulch is a good deterrent. Insects cannot survive the heat. Once the mulch is spread in a garden insects may take up residence in the mulch.

Does mulch prevents weeds?

No. Mulch is used as a means to suppress weeds not prevent them. It will enhance your landscape. And when properly installed helps absorb moisture, prevent erosion of soil, and improve the organic content of the soil in your plant beds.

Does mulch contain weed seeds?

No, Mulch is a natural forest product made out of trees that are ground and composted. Weeds seeds are not found in mulch but in the garden soil.

Playground

What is Engineered Wood Fiber or Playground Mulch?

The product we sell EWF(Playground Mulch) is made from 100% virgin wood fiber, not used wood, which may contain things you don’t want in your playground. It is certified to meet standards set by IPEMA(International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association) and complies with ASTM specification F1292 impact absorption & F1951 for wheel chair access. Most suppliers do not sell certified products.

Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

When should I top off my play areas?

It will depend on how much use your play area gets. We recommend topping of your playground at least once every 12 months.

How much safety surface do I need for my playground?

The size and height of the playground equipment you have and the depth of the playground safety surface will determine how much safety surface depth you need. Typically it is necessary to add at a minimum three inches of new certified safety surface each year. (Engineered wood fiber)

How soon can I have playground chips installed?

The average turnaround time for installation is between 1-2 weeks. Rush installations are possible.

What is a dig out?

A dig out is the removal of the old decomposed material from a playground. This process typically occurs in a playground with wood playground chips every five to seven years. The material as it ages decomposes and loses its impact absorption over time. Typically we remove twelve inches which is the normal depth on many commercial playgrounds. Often, at this time, we will install new drainage under the playground which will extend the life of the safety surface by allowing the material to dry out easily after periods of inclement weather. Soil barriers are replaced, playground equipment footings are inspected and new material is installed.

How is the safety surface (playground mulch) installed?

Normally we use our fleet of blower trucks to install this material. The material is blown in using a four or five inch hose. Distances of up to four hundred feet are possible. This eliminates damage to turf and concrete by foot or machine traffic.

Can you install rubber mulch?

Yes we do install rubber mulch. The material is ADA compliant. It comes in bags or super sacks depending on the quantities required. There is a lead time of approximately two weeks on rubber mulch. Colors for mulch are natural black, ocean blue, mocha brown, southern cypress, black onyx, turf green and cedar red.

Does Mulch Solutions carry Playground Sand?

Yes we furnish and install playground sand for all customers. The sand is pure white and is screened to remove all particles. It is fine in particle size and is best for playgrounds. It will not stain clothes like yellow sand and is not course or rough like masonry sand. There is a minimum on all orders.

Watering

How often should I water my annual flowers?

Annual flowers should be watered daily for the first week after installation. A general rule of thumb is depending on your sun exposure: 4-7 times a week above 90 degrees, 3-5 time a week 70-90 degrees and 2-3 times a week at 50-70 degrees.

My lawn has just been aerated and seeded how often should I water it?

Typically the new seed will take between a seven to ten days to germinate during the fall. It requires daily watering up until germination and for a period of about two weeks after germination. This watering does not need to saturate the ground but needs to provide adequate moisture for the grass. Usually five to fifteen minutes per lawn area is sufficient. You do not want the lawn so wet the water is running off. The best time to water is in the morning. You do not need to water if sufficient rain falls during a particular day. The grass after two weeks should be watered up until November three to five times and then weather permitting it may be stopped entirely however if the weather remains warm and dry keep watering.

You just installed new plantings at my house how often do I water?

The best answer is water for the next year as often as it takes to keep the plant moist. The roots on a plant from a nursery have been cut and take time to heal. If they were grown in a container they are accustomed with being saturated several times daily. Keep the entire root ball and surrounding soil thoroughly moist. Water slowly so the water penetrates, typically two to three minutes per shrub and five to ten minutes per tree. Check the soil moisture on small plants every two to three days and trees every three to five days. Overwatering does as much harm as under watering. Do not drown the plant. Too much or too little water will kill a plant. Call the office if symptoms such as wilting, yellowing or falling leaves or needles are observed.

The sod looks great now how often do I need to water it?

Sod should be watered every day for two to three weeks. It must be saturated so that it is difficult to walk on the sod without sinking into the lawn. After that water for two weeks every other day and then allow the sod to go to a normal watering schedule as you would for any other lawn. Typically twenty to thirty minutes four days a week when temperatures are above 90 degrees, three times a week between 70 -90 degrees and two times per week between 50-70 degrees.

Lawn

Can I just get my lawn mowed?

Yes we offer three plans for just mowing of the lawn.

Do you offer different lawn mowing plans?

Envirogrow Lawn & Landscape offers three levels of mowing service. All clippings are to be recycled into the lawn, unless you request us to bag them. Trimming with a line trimmer will be performed around all tree rings or bed edges bordered by turf. Hard surfaces that border turf shall be stick edged every other cut. All hard surface areas shall be blown after mowing to maintain a neat appearance. Plan A provides weekly cutting of your lawn.(this is recommended for irrigated properties) (End of March – Beginning of November)- average number of cuts in a year(32) Plan B provides weekly mowing of your lawn during the spring (End of March-June 15th) and fall (September 15th- Beginning of November). Moving to a biweekly schedule during the summer. (June 15th-September 15th)- average number of cuts in a year(24) Plan C is a biweekly mowing plan. (End of March – Beginning of November)-average number of cuts in a year(16)

When does the mowing season start?

Typically we begin mowing either the last week of March or the first week of April. Our decision is based strictly on the weather and the lawn. If it is not growing we do not cut it.

When does the mowing season end?

Normally it ends in the first week of November. If you want your lawn mowed after that point simply contact the office and we will continue cutting.

What if my lawn does not need to be cut a particular week?

Contact our office at least 24 hours prior to your normal schedule date and we can skip the cutting for you that week.

Yes upon request we will cut a lawn using 21” mowers only. The cost is slightly higher please let us know at the time we are performing an estimate.

Will you perform a onetime mowing?

Yes we will however payment is required prior to the cut.

I have a large field in the back that I only want mowed once a month will you do that?

Yes we can accommodate any and all special requests.

What happens if it rains?

When it is too wet to work, we will do our best to get the job done as close as possible to the day your lawn is normally scheduled. We will resume mowing again as soon as it is dry enough to cut the lawn areas without damaging them.

What if my mowing day falls on a holiday?

If your scheduled mowing day falls on a holiday Envirogrow will cut the lawn either the day before or day after the Holiday weather permitting. We recognize three holidays during the summer, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

What is the best cutting height?

This will depend on your type of grass. The most common variety of grass in the areas is tall fescue. The best height is three inches. All our mowers are set at three inches. We do accommodate request for different heights. This height can be raised in the summer at your request.

How sharp should the blades on the mower be?

You want the blades to be sharp. We sharpen are blades often to insure they are always sharp.

Aeration

When should I aerate?

We recommend at a minimum aerating all lawns in the late summer to early fall (Augiust 15- September 30th) in conjunction with seed and compost. Aeration produces a much healthier lawn. Aerating in the spring is very beneficial and will help moisture get farther down into the soil keeping the lawn greener.

My lawn was just seeded and aerated when can I cut it?

We recommend waiting a minimum of two weeks. If we are mowing your lawn we will not cut it for the next two weeks. Regular cuts will resume at that time.

How do you aerate?

We use a commercial walk behind aeration units that take a plug every 3.5 inches. We cross aerate your lawn. Cross aeration means we run the machine in two directions over your lawn which doubles the number of plug holes in your lawn.

You came an aerated my lawn and installed the seed and compost now what?

Commence watering. Typically the new seed will take between seven to ten days to germinate in the fall and ten to fourteen days in the spring. Allow at least a week before mowing turf, two weeks if possible depending on growth. The lawn requires daily watering up until germination and for a period of about two weeks after germination. If this service was performed in the spring continue watering following these simple guidelines. Typically twenty to thirty minutes four days a week when temperatures are above 90 degrees, three times a week between 70 -90 degrees and two times per week between 50-70 degrees. If the service occurred in the fall continue watering the grass until November approximately three to five times based on temperature and rainfall and then weather permitting it may be stopped entirely however if the weather remains warm and dry keep watering.
